Austin Riesen reared monkeys in darkness for the first 3 to 6 months of their lives. When these animals were then introduced into a normal environment, they had great difficulties in distinguishing even the simplest shapes. It took them weeks or even months to learn how to tell a circle from a square—a task that a normal monkey learns in a few days.

Similar results were later obtained in monkeys by Austin Riesen and his colleagues,19 who reared newborn chimpanzees in the dark. By three to four months of age, the normal chimpanzee readily learns to discriminate among visual stimuli and between friends and strangers. The infant chimpanzee recognizes and welcomes its caretaker but shows fear and avoidance of strangers. A chimpanzee reared in the dark for over a year and then restored to a normal environment does not learn readily to recognize and avoid objects and cannot discriminate vertical from horizontal lines.
