Nevertheless, with perverse pride former F-8 pilots actually boasted of their mount's dismal safety record. The aircraft's violent spin characteristics and delicate landing technique were cause for professional esteem as much as concern, and such traits were pointed out at the succession of "last annual Crusader balls" held at Miramar. The sixth of these was celebrated in May 1988, at which time it was noted that of 1,261 F-8s built, no fewer than 1,106 were involved in major accidents. There was a solemn moment, though, in which time was taken to honor the 186 pilots who died in Crusaders through the years.

Weaknesses
For one it's accident prone, out of the 1,261 crusaders in the U.S navy during Vietnam, 1,106 were involved in some kind of accident (although all in all, 170 were destroyed by some cause or another, usually a malfunction). Also despite the 20mm's firepower, these things can jam in a high G turn, leaving you without your primary armament (only four kills in Vietnam were cannon kills).
