The Normans (lit. ”Northmen”) were Scandinavian invaders (especially Danish Vikings) who began to occupy the northern area of France now known as Normandy in the latter half of the 9th century. 16世紀頃のイギリスでは戦争で大型の弓を使っていたらしい。イギリス兵士のこの「大弓」は大変威力があり、近隣諸国にも恐れられていたらしい。その時代は弓等を使うために、接近戦が行われていたのですが、ある時フランスとの戦で、フランス領に攻め込んだイギリス兵士たちは、相手のフランス兵を威嚇するためにこの「中指サイン」を使ったらしい。

つまりこの時代の弓は中指を弓の弦に引っ掛けて矢を引く、つまり弓を使うという意味で使ったらしい。　

また中指を立てた手の形は確かに矢を引いた弓の形を表しているようにも見えます。

この攻撃力があることで恐れられていた大弓が出てくるぞと、相手の戦意を喪失させるために、このサインを示したというのです。
