行頭に｢*｣｢-｣｢o｣時に｢+｣｢x｣で箇条書き､

あと強調はﾀﾞﾌﾞﾙｸｫｰﾄに｢``?''｣とか大文字､1文字空けの大文字(｢H O G E｣)とかもありますね｡
日本でも使ってる様なのだと､｢?[1]｣とか｢?[*1]｣とかで脚注とか､
数字付きの箇条書きが｢1. ?｣｢1) ?｣とか｡

英文のﾏﾆｭｱﾙや､RFCとかだと人によって若干違うのだったり､色々見れます｡

あと､ﾒｰﾙでは使われない気がするのでちょっと脱線かも知れないけれど､昔のﾀｲﾌﾟﾗｲﾀやﾗｲﾝﾌﾟﾘﾝﾀからの名残りで､ﾊﾞｯｸｽﾍﾟｰｽを表す文字ｺｰﾄﾞ(0x08)を使って二度打ちの強調を表す事がありました｡

多分､こういうのはﾀｲﾌﾟﾗｲﾀｰも含めた英文の文化なのだと思います｡

既にあるご回答への補足ですが､強調には､ｱｽﾃﾘｽｸのほか､ｱﾝﾀﾞｰﾊﾞｰを使うこともあります(ﾀｲﾌﾟｾｯﾃｨﾝｸﾞの約束事として､ｱﾝﾀﾞｰﾊﾞｰで挟んだものはｲﾀﾘｯｸ)｡また､単に大文字にする場合も､もちろん｡


例：
This medicine should *not* be used in children under 5.
This medicine should _not_ be used in children under 5.
This medicine should NOT be used in children under 5.


さらに強調したいときは､ｱｽﾃﾘｽｸ2段重ねなどします｡これは｢太字｣の扱いです｡

This medicine should __not__ be used ...


戯曲でのﾄ書きが､英語ではｲﾀﾘｯｸで示されるのですが､ﾒｰﾙやTwitterなどでもそういうﾄ書き的な部分はｱｽﾃﾘｽｸで挟みます｡
